What to Consider When Dry Hiring a Vac Truck?

04/12/2019

Many urban projects require non-destructive digging through the use of a vac truck due to the delicate nature of utilities and pipes under the surface. Operating vac trucks require less manual labour than regular excavation techniques around pipes and utilities. This method of excavation is also safer as it does not involve the risk of potentially striking a cable and it is also quieter, which is beneficial in a residential environment.

If you don’t already own a vacuum excavation truck, then hiring one of these machines is the next best thing. If you have never hired a sucker truck, then you might not be sure what to consider when hiring one of these machines. This article will outline all the factors you need to consider when dry hiring a vacuum excavation truck.

Do You Have an Experienced Operator?

It seems like an obvious question, but if you are dry hiring a vacuum truck then you should always ensure that you have an experienced operator with the machine on site when you are undertaking work. If you don’t, an experienced operator from the hire company can come to site and run your workers through a pre-start check, show them how to operate the vacuum unit and truck. They will also show them how to maintain the vac truck correctly and come along with the workers onsite for a day or two to ensure the machine is being operated and maintained correctly.

Cost

The dry hire of vac trucks can range from approximately $500 per day for a 1,000 litre truck to $650 per day for a 7,000 litre truck. Both of these prices are exclusive of GST and may vary depending on your region and hire duration. Obviously, as smaller capacity sucker trucks is cheaper to hire, you should only hire a truck that is appropriate to the size and duration of your project. If you communicate your project’s requirements with a vac truck hire company, then they might recommend which truck capacity is appropriate for you. This would ensure that you do not needlessly spend your money on a truck capacity that is too big for what you need.

Have You Inspected the Machine?

Before you gain possession of a vac truck from its owner, you should inspect the truck for any obvious faults and damage and communicate this to the machine’s owner. It is always a good idea to take note of anything about the machine that you are not sure about to ensure you have evidence you did not cause the damage. If you notice any faults with the machine once you start operating it, then it is best to contact the machine provider as soon as you can.
